This book is a pioneering initiative, much like a bottle cast out to sea. Carried by the waves and buffeted by the elements, this bottle drifts along, carrying its story and its mission to raise awareness, in the hope that everyone who chooses to read it will find within it the essential insight needed to rethink their stance on the rights of deaf and hard-of-hearing people in particular, and human rights in general. The book also describes the Association of Friends of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Young People in Soum (ASAJSM), which I know through its dynamic president, Bakouan Mamouroua, who has made a significant contribution - through awareness-raising, advocacy and training activities - to restoring the dignity and ensuring respect for the rights of deaf and hard-of-hearing people in Soum in particular and in Burkina Faso in general. In 2011, rather than giving up in the face of dwindling funding sources for civil society organisations (CSOs), the organisation did not hesitate to launch a project to promote inclusive education for deaf and hard-of-hearing children in the Sahel.
