Human rights in Portuguese-speaking Africa did not begin to be truly recognized as important until after the establishment of democratic regimes in the early 1990s. These countries were among the last on the African continent to gain independence. The situation worsened further when, immediately after gaining independence, they fell under single-party regimes. This was a period when fundamental rights were neglected and violated. This situation worsened further with the armed conflicts in Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau. It is important to emphasize that human rights, although deeply rooted in African culture, are conceived there quite differently from the European perspective. Our study therefore aims to shed light on these unique perceptions and the mechanisms that Portuguese-speaking countries employ to protect them. We will also analyze France's influence in this area, a topic that remains under-explored by French research.
