Spinoza has been called both a God-intoxicated philosopher and an atheist, both a pioneer of secular Judaism and a bitter critic of religion. Spinoza was a Jew by birth, but he chose to live outside any religious community. He was deeply engaged both in traditional Hebrew learning and in contemporary physical science. He identified God with Nature or Substance, a theme that runs through his work, enabling him to naturalize religion but equally important to divinize Nature.1 He emerges not as a rationalist precursor of the enlightenment, but as a thinker of the highest importance in his own right, both in philosophy and religion. This book introduces Spinoza, the God-intoxicated philosopher, for possible solutions for religious fundamentalism, and argues that Spinoza’s God- concept can provide a harmonious existence of humans with God, Nature, and fellow beings. Spinoza’s God concept and the mystical nature of his religious experience of God as Natura naturans, which, for Spinoza, refers to the self- causing activity of Nature. Thus, Spinoza identifies God with Nature.
