Relay
Twenty-three thousand people hold this job.The grid cannot run without them.Substation protection and control technicians - relay techs - test and maintain the devices that keep the power system from destroying itself. About 23,400 people do it, the journeyman-level median is $103,020 (BLS OES series 49-2095, May 2025 - not entry pay; apprentices start far lower), and there is no degree gate. Two facts make this seat unusual. First, scarcity: roughly 2,000 openings a year nationally, replacement seats included - utilities publish their own recruitment brochures for it because they cannot fill it. Second, the work is legally non-discretionary: NERC standard PRC-005 requires a documented protection-system maintenance program, which means relay maintenance happens in every rate case, every budget cycle, every year. This is a career-path book, not exam prep - the aptitude-test books already exist and this is not one of them. It maps who crosses over (E&I technicians, military electronics ratings, NETA field techs, plant electricians), how utility hiring actually screens (aptitude batteries vary by employer - verify which one yours uses), what the apprenticeship years pay and teach, and the ladder from field tech toward P&C specialist. It is honest about the constraints: the seat is scarce and geographically bound to where utilities are, an apprenticeship takes years, and union hiring-hall rules vary. Those are reasons to run the application game well, not reasons to stay away.Licensing is signposted throughout - in most US utility contexts this is not a state-licensed occupation, but employer qualification programs, background checks and per-utility aptitude policies govern entry. An Australian appendix is built from scratch around state and territory electrical licensing and AS 2067.Scarce seats reward the people who understand how they're filled.
