Ist die Wahl der Verfügbarkeit oder einem leistbaren Preis zuzuschreiben oder wird sie doch aus künstlerischem Antrieb heraus getroffen. Nikolai Astrup, Micheline de Bellefroid, Auguste Beuret, Johann Martin Schmidt und Henri Cueco sowie dänische und belgische Künstlergruppen werden als Beispiele genommen. Aber auch indische, türkische, japanische und aztekische Künstlertraditionen werden untersucht. Darüber hinaus werden traditionelle und „cutting edge“ Untersuchungsmethoden von Papier als Informationsträger präsentiert. The book brings together the latest research results concerning paper used by artists. The scribe’s or printer’s choice for a certain kind of paper tells us about the condition of the local paper-making craft, the availability of a raw material, trade, customs and habits; where a particular paper is chosen for a drawing or a printed work of art, artistic intent of the artist is added to all the above. The book deals with all these aspects. The newly found information is relevant for both art history and conservation of art. From Renaissance till today, single aspects are highlighted and are meant to further stimulate that kind of study, combining research in conservation and (art) history.
