The Empath

The Empath tells the moving story of Maxi, a young girl who is taken to an orphanage after the sudden death of her parents. But loss is not the only thing that changes her life for ever: Maxi discovers that she can feel other people’s emotions intensely — not simply recognise them, but experience them in body and soul. At first, her gift is a burden. Maxi is overwhelmed by the grief, anger and uncertainty she absorbs from those around her. But over time — supported by her deep bond with her brother Connor, and friendships with Jamal, Leni, Emma and the other children — she learns to live with her ability. Maxi becomes a confidante, the “heart” of the small community. Her gift continues to grow: she begins to see memories, hear unspoken thoughts, and sense what others do not yet understand. As a teenager, she meets Mara, a mysterious woman who seems to know more about Maxi’s origins and her gift. Maxi sets out on a journey into her past — and a search for the truth about herself.
